Natural skin care
involves the use of naturally-derived ingredients, such as essential oils, herbs, roots, or flowers, combined with natural carrier agents, such as water, oils or natural soap. The true definition is skin care based on using botanical ingredients currently existing or formed by nature, without the use of synthetic chemicals. As a result, many people who use natural skin care, make their own products at home. There have been some scientific studies conducted that have proven the use of certain natural ingredients, such as chamomile, which has demonstrated healing and anti-inflammatory properties when applied topically. Also, many spas focus on using more naturally derived skin care products. In addition, in recent years, some cosmetics made entirely from natural products such as minerals from the earth have become popular. Clay is also used in face and body masks because it has compounds that leave skin feeling smooth and hydrated.
For a natural exfoliation, try using the dry brush method. It eliminates dead skin cells, improves lymph and blood circulation and decreases puffiness. An added benefit is that the gentle pressure is calming to the nervous system. To give yourself a dry brush exfoliation, simply use a soft, natural bristle brush to move in a circular motion over the entire body.
Yogurt is a wonderful cleanser and moisturizer. Use organic, plain yogurt (you may also add a little honey, if you wish) and spread it onto your face, avoiding the eyes. Leave it on your face for about ten minutes and then wash off with water. Honey has been used throughout the centuries for skin care and hair care treatments. Cleopatra was famous for her milk and honey baths, and Poppea, wife of Roman Emperor Nero, used a honey and milk lotion to keep her looking youthful. For a natural facial mask, simply beat two eggs, add a little water (and honey, if desired.) Rub it onto your face and let it dry for fifteen minutes, then rinse well. This is a good way to lightly exfoliate your skin as well. Other natural ingredients used for skin care includes olive oil, oatmeal, avocado and sugar. Olive oil can be mixed with sugar for a facial scrub to remove dead skin cells. Oatmeal as a facial cleanser is used in many parts of the world. A mixture of 3 tablespoons of oatmeal with 2 tablespoons witch hazel and a few drops of water makes a very good cleanser that leaves your face feeling very smooth and soft. This recipe is good for all skin types. You can also add a little olive oil if your skin is very dry. Another natural cleanser that is good for dry skin is to peel and mash half an avocado, mix with half cup milk and one egg yolk. Beat it together until it’s a thin, creamy consistency and apply with cotton balls as you would a cleanser and rinse well with warm water.
